panama...or not.

so here i was enjoying my wonderful relaxing shower, pondering the things of the world, like whether i should make the boys breakfast, or just throw a loaf of banana bread on the ground and let them fight it out with the dog. it all of a sudden occurred to me that we should make panama night bigger. i mean, honestly, i am american. proud to be one. (and, the rest of my little family is as non ethnic as it comes... that's the pc way of saying w-h-i-t-e ;) oh, and for those of you who have never met me or have little recollection, i'm about as "ethnic" as a paper plate and proud of it!) while i do love arroz con pollo, empanadas, cheese olivettes...(are those really panamanian?), we should broaden our horizons. why deny other such foods, like grandma's potato salad (the day before what!?! salad), just because it is not "panamanian"?
conclusion:
let's make it a family recipe night. things we remember growing up with as kids so we can share these memories with our extended family. i mean, el has no idea what arroz con pollo is. (shame on me.) and i am sure aunt m, aunt s, and aunt d have some hidden, secret, delicious recipes... sorry aunt h. i know all your secrets, except the french silk!
anyway, let me know what you think. i'm going to try to send this out in a mass email to get ahold of everyone.

I agree... Because we were just calling it "Panama Night" to differentiate it from the actual reunion. Mostly it just sprang from so many people wanting to eat arroz con pollo, but also wanting traditional Thanksgiving food... So, I think it would be neat if we all tried to make a dish that we loved growing up... Something that was your favorite, or something like that... I don't know. Like I know my absolute favorite cookie growing up was "Uncooked cookies" (which are those no-bake cookies called by a million different names). And while that's not exotic at all... It's something that was my favorite when I was little. So, do enough people have favorites that we could just make a mish mash of food for this meal? Also... Instead of calling it Panama Night, we could call it Family Fun and Food Fiesta :). Okay, novel over :).

I really don't care. As long as there's food, I'm in!

Just tell me the time and date and I'll be there...makes no difference to me. It sounds like a good suggestion.

i know brad loves that NASTY frozen fruit salad type thing (you can already tell I don't, but he does and that's what matters) haha...also I absolutely LOVE grandma's fruit salad and hope that she shares her recipe again with me, while I have something to write it down with ;)

Well, then you can bring two dishes, Tarylyn! (The more food, the merrier!). Bring that "nasty" frozen fruit salad (which is actually a staple in our family... Grandma makes it too), and also bring something that was your favorite growing up!!! YUM! Okay, I'm getting excited for food... November needs to hurry it on up and get here!

Oh, it just occurred to me that frozen fruit salad might end up on the menu for Thanksgiving (that's up to Aunt M).

i think it'd be more fun to have everyone's recipes. i'd be willing to contribute money to have them made, but am really ok with everything.

Yeah, I didn't know if we wanted to have them submitted early and made into a cookbook (my mom did this once for HLML in Dothan), or if we all wanted to bring the recipes to the dishes we were bringing, and we all get together and exchange recipes and make the cookbooks ourselves. Or, we could have the men keep the kids, and let all the women get together with the recipes (not the food) like before we do the family fun and food fiesta... Anyway, don't know if I'm making sense... But yeah, I agree about wanting everyone's recipes!

What does Debbie say? How does she want the cook book to be constructed?

Oh, and BTW, how do I vote for black with green writing? Anyway, that's my vote.

I'll ask my mom... But I'm pretty sure her answer will be "I don't care." And if that is her answer, we can always open it up to a vote :). Also, I haven't set up a poll yet for the t-shirt color, which is why you can't find a place to vote for it ;). I was giving everyone until Monday, 10th to make color nominations. But I promise to get a new poll up for voting on the t-shirt color on Monday! And then I'll send out an email to make everyone aware of the poll! Love to all! Hila B
